Adrenal Glands

The adrenal glands are two small glands located on top of each kidney. They are part of the endocrine system and are responsible for producing and secreting hormones that are essential for regulating various bodily functions. The adrenal glands are composed of two parts: the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla.

The adrenal cortex produces steroid hormones, including cortisol, aldosterone, and androgens. Cortisol helps regulate metabolism, immune response, and stress response. Aldosterone helps regulate blood pressure and electrolyte balance. Androgens are male sex hormones that are also produced in small amounts by females.

The adrenal medulla produces two hormones: epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) and norepinephrine. These hormones are involved in the “fight or flight” response, which prepares the body to respond to stress or danger by increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration.

Overall, the adrenal glands play an important role in maintaining homeostasis in the body and responding to stress.
