Cortisol

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, which are located on top of the kidneys. It belongs to a class of hormones known as glucocorticoids, which are involved in the regulation of many physiological processes in the body, including metabolism, immune response, and stress response.

Cortisol plays a key role in the body’s response to stress by increasing glucose levels in the blood, which provides the body with energy to cope with a stressor. It also helps to regulate blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and modulate the immune system.

However, chronic exposure to high levels of cortisol can have negative effects on health, including increased risk of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and weakened immune function. Additionally, cortisol dysregulation has been linked to a variety of mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression.
