Heart

The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. It is located in the chest, between the lungs and behind the sternum (breastbone). The heart is roughly the size of a fist and is responsible for circulating oxygenated blood to all the cells in the body and returning deoxygenated blood back to the lungs to be reoxygenated.

The heart is made up of four chambers: the left and right atria and the left and right ventricles. Blood flows from the atria to the ventricles through the heart’s valves, which open and close to ensure that blood flows in the correct direction. The heart also has its own blood supply, known as coronary circulation, which ensures that the heart muscle receives the nutrients and oxygen it needs to function properly.
