Lymph Nodes

Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that are part of the lymphatic system. They are found throughout the body and are connected by lymphatic vessels. Lymph nodes play an important role in the immune system by filtering and trapping foreign substances, such as bacteria, viruses, and cancer cells, from the lymphatic fluid that flows through them. They contain white blood cells called lymphocytes, which help to identify and fight off foreign substances.

When the body is fighting an infection or disease, the lymph nodes in the affected area may become swollen and tender as they work to remove the foreign substances from the lymphatic fluid. In some cases, lymph nodes may need to be surgically removed if they become cancerous or if they are causing a blockage in the lymphatic system.
