Respiratory System

The respiratory system is a biological system composed of organs and tissues that facilitate breathing and gas exchange. Its primary function is to take in oxygen from the air and expel carbon dioxide from the body.

The main components of the respiratory system include the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, and diaphragm. The nose and mouth are the entry points for air, which is then filtered, humidified, and warmed as it passes through the respiratory tract.

The respiratory system is not only essential for oxygenating the body, but also plays a role in immune health. It relies on components of both the innate and adaptive immune systems to protect the lungs and the rest of the respiratory tract against inhaled microorganisms.
