Dozens of cultures throughout the ages have believed in the existence of an energy field that surrounds and penetrates the body. The ancient people of India named this energy prana. The ancient Chinese called it qi. Jewish and Christian teachings also make reference to this mysterious field. While critics may label these beliefs as ancient mysticism that has no relevance to the natural world, the reality is that there is far more substance to what we call the human energy field than previously thought.
What is the human energy field?
The human energy field (HEF) is often referred to as an aura. The word “aura” has mystic connotations, and it is said to not only contain energetic aspects of the physical body, but also intangible things like our feelings, thoughts, and states of consciousness.1
Traditional Chinese medicine gives us further insight into the human energy field. According to TCM, there is a vital source of energy called “qi” that flows through all things. But this energy is not only believed to flow along meridians throughout the body, but also on surface of the body.2
Additionally, while TCM states that energy flows along meridians in the body, the Ancient Indian concept of prana describes vital energy in relation to body chakras. Along with the 7 chakras within the body, many ancient yogis believed that there are 5 additional major chakras outside of the body as well.3
Does the HEF really exist?
While the human energy field may have its roots in the concept of auras, qi, and chakras, there are now a variety of methods used to measure this mysterious field that are far more credible than subjective readings.
Though scientists have always been skeptical of the HEF’s existence, opinions began to change in the scientific community as new instruments came out that are capable of measuring this field.
One such machine is called the SQUID, which stands for superconducting quantum interference device. Invented in 1970 by David Cohen of MIT, the SQUID can detect tiny biomagnetic fields associated with the body’s physiological activities. After some improvements, Cohen’s device was able to measure magnetic fields produced by brain activity.4
In addition, other 21st century scientific discoveries have found that the body not only has a magnetic field, but also an electric field and emits acoustical energy and low-level light. Some of these discoveries include the following.
Electron densities
The gas discharge visualization (GDV) camera created by Dr. Konstantin Korotkov measures electron densities in various parts of the body. Changes in the color, size, and shape of the body’s energy field can be observed with this instrument.5
Light emission
An experiment conducted by Dr. Richard Dobrin and Dr. John Pierrakos found that there was a measured increase in light when subjects were in a room, and the light even decreased slightly when someone who was depressed or exhausted was in the room.6
Vibrational frequencies
In 1965, Russian scientists discovered that living organisms emit vibrations at a specific frequency (300 to 2,000 nanometers).6
Electrodermal activity
Conventional medicine has used devices that measure electrical activity like the electrocardiogram (ECG) for a number of years, and electrodermal screenings and galvanic skin response are other scientific methods by which to measure this part of the human energy field.6
Audible frequencies
Valerie Hunt found that vibrations from the body create a range of frequencies that are audible and that specific colors correlate with certain frequencies.7
Resonating frequencies
The Reba device invented by Dr. Reimar Banis and Dr. Ulrike Banis measures the body’s energy channels by utilizing frequencies that resonate with brain waves.8
What is the HEF’s role in health and wellness?
Now we know more about the basis of the human energy field and how it can be measured. But why is this field important to our health and wellness?
Simply put, the health of the body impacts the human energy field. And by measuring this field, we can get clues into the state of a person’s well-being.
In addition, measuring the human energy field can help us determine which health and wellness options would be the most beneficial for the person. An electrodermal screening, for example, not only identifies which areas may need support, but also helps to identify which wellness products the body prefers most.
Another concept is that a person’s energy field also impacts the state of other fields with which it comes into contact. This concept that the energy field is a communicator was applied to the holistic nursing field in the 1990s. A few of these ideas that still influence holistic nursing care today include the following:
- A “caring field” of energetic connection is created when the nurse is fully present with a client.
- A nurse can influence this field “through their intentions, actions, thoughts, and feelings.”
- A healing resonance occurs when a nurse and patient meet in this energetic field.9
An experiment conducted in 2009 also shows the impact that one person’s energy field can have on another’s. In this particular experiment of two test subjects, the evidence showed that one person’s brain waves had influenced the other’s after meditating together for 10 minutes.10
Measuring the human energy field for better health
As you can see from just a few of the multitude of scientific studies, the evidence that the human energy field exists can’t be ignored. But more importantly than just knowing this field exists is knowing that measuring the HEF can reveal key information about an individual that can benefit them greatly in their overall wellness.
